How an iPad helped Tom with brushing his teeth

In the 5 months since Tom got an iPad from Hearts and Minds, it has helped him in all sorts of unexpected ways, according to Sue, his Mum:

"As you can see, he now brushes his teeth better, and more willingly using a Brush Time App.  The iPad also got him interested in doing puzzles and colouring, which started on the iPad and has now progressed into an interest in actual puzzles and colouring books, widening his previous interests.

"Although non-verbal he will hold 'conversations' using the talking back animal Apps on the iPad, encouraging him vocally.  He has also improved his recognition of shapes and colours using learning Apps on the iPad, which I can now see in his daily understanding of language. It has really widened his world!"

Publicity pays for Peter and his iPad

Last month Traci Morrissey went public with an appeal to families in Liverpool to donate their old mobile phones so that she could obtain an iPad from Hearts and Minds for her son Peter.

Today, 2 1/2 year old Peter shows just how happy he is with his new iPad:

Traci says: "Thank you so much to everyone who helped.  Peter is absolutely ecstatic about his new iPad!! He really loves it!  Peter is waiting on diagnosis of ASD, SPD, ADHD and speech and language delay, so the iPad has been a god send.  The Bay TV appeal and article in the Liverpool Echo really worked wonders, we're like local celebrities now!"

Family Fun Day and Bike Ride

Champion Cyclist becomes a Patron of Hearts and Minds

Paralympic Medallist Rik Waddon has become a Patron of Hearts and Minds.   A British road and track racing cyclist, who has cerebral palsy, he is married to British Paralympic swimmer, Natalie Jones, and lives in Chorley, Lancashire.  He won medals for Great Britain at both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games.

Hearts and Minds founder Ian McGrath commented:  "I am absolutely delighted and honoured that Rik has become a Patron.  He has been a huge supporter of Hearts and Minds over the last year and helped to raise the profile of the many fund-raising events that he has taken part in, such as the Cycling Buddy Charity Challenge in Spain.   Everyone at Hearts and Minds is looking forward to working with him even more closely in the future."

Surprised by an iPad

You've spent weeks collecting old mobile phones to get an iPad through the Hearts and Minds mobile phone recycling scheme for your child.  Finally it arrives.  So how do you present it?

This is what Toni Harwood did once her campaign was finished: 

"The iPad arrived while he was at school, so I took it up with me at the end of the day," she says.  "The children were all in the hall practising for the end of year play.  But the teachers made time at the end to ask Ethan about his challenge, talk about it in front of the whole school, and then surprise him with the iPad. 

"Brought a tear to this proud Mum's eye.  Thank you all for making this possible.  Now to learn about Minecraft!!"
