Dress designer to the 'stars' Nadine shows her support for Hearts & Minds

Nadine Merabi launched the brand Ono Uno in Autumn 2013 , they create luxurious, timeless, high end evening wear.
Nadine has dressed some of the UK’s best known tv actresses including: Michelle  Keegan , Brooke Vincent , Catherine Tyldesley, Jennifer MetCalfe and Georgia May Foote.

Nadine Merabi has kindly offered Hearts & Minds a bespoke dress to be auctioned off at our annual ball in November. She will be designing a completely unique dress for the lucky winner which includes all fittings and everything by Nadine herself.

Nadine is relatively new to the fashion world , having remarkably taught herself how to sew and design. Tucked away in her bedroom, using a machine she bought from Argos and watching You Tube videos. Nadine worried she would be laughed at, it was an idea she kept to herself after a total U-turn in her education and career as an International hockey player, representing her country for nearly 10 years.

You can see her unique & stunning dresses here www.onouno.com/about-ono-uno/

Shayne becomes a patron for Hearts & Minds

Hearts & Minds Challenge are delighted to announce that X Factor winner Shayne Ward is their new Patron.

Shayne will be helping to spread more awareness for the Sale based charity, which helps families with children with autism.
Manchester born Shayne Ward has had first hand experience of autism as his nephew has been diagnosed as autistic, making the charity something that is close to his heart. The singer, who is about to star in a tour of Jeff Wayne’s ‘The War of the Worlds’, says he didn’t have to think twice about becoming a patron for the charity.
“I’m excited and honoured to be welcomed as a new patron of Hearts & Minds Challenge and I want to help them fight the right fight in any way that I can.
The work they do is vital for those with autism as they assist with early intervention and early education. Having personal experience of it, I see why it is so important to help those affected and their families.”

Shayne will be joining a host of other Hearts & Minds Challenge patrons, including Boyzone’s Keith Duffy, TV Presenter Melanie Sykes, Paralypian Rik Waddon and Former Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes.

Fellow Hearts & Minds supporter and Emmerdale starlet Roxanne Pallett has also been helping to promote the charity’s cause. Roxanne recently met the team at the Mercure Hotel on Piccadilly to shoot a video alongside Shayne to help promote the charity’s cash back website.
She expressed:
“The Hearts & Minds challenge is such an inspiring charity! It’s great to get involved to promote and support the important work that they do and to help them raise awareness for families with autistic children.”

A Derbyshire Mum's fight to get her son an autism diagnosis

Derbyshire Mum Caroline has three boys, but from birth she noticed something different about Lewis.

"He never slept, never fed well, never looked at us, and at 2 was still non verbal," says Caroline.

They took him for a hearing test when he was two, and at the appointment Lewis began arm flapping and an assessment for autism was recommended.

Three years later and the family are still fighting to get a diagnosis, even though he has many issues:

"A few worries are no danger awareness, a poor diet of only brown and cream foods, no sleep, and delayed speech... and too many others to mention."

But because he has no diagnosis, he has no services.  But Caroline is fighting to help Lewis from every angle: he began a new assessment in a new area 6 months ago.

"We will never give up!"

She has also joined the Hearts and Minds Challenge to get her son an iPad by collecting old mobile phones.

"I think that an iPad would help Lewis interact, learn, help his speech, independence, and self help skills in life,"  she says.

Please support her mobile phone collection if you can:

As if that wasn't enough, she is now making and selling beautiful jewellery to raise autism awareness and funds for Hearts and Minds.  Once again, her son was the inspiration, because she needed an ID bracelet for him in case he slipped away:

"Lewis lets go of my hand a lot, and I was so worried he would get lost on holiday, so I thought what a fab idea to make ID bracelets, then came a few ideas of jewellery and ideas just flowed from my head."

Manchester Mums run a lively Facebook campaign to get TWO iPads

A lively Facebook campaign aims to get two iPads for two young men in Manchester via the Hearts and Minds mobile phone recycling campaign.

Annette Jackson is one of two parents behind the campaign:

"My son is autistic and has an iPad that has dramatically helped his speech and education - for example he can count to 10 now! It's really amazing how much it has helped him.  I am collecting old phones to try and get an iPad for my nephew Karl, while my friend is collecting for her son Reiss -  I met her through our local autism support group."

Reiss is 11, autistic, and has very little language or communication, and sadly his old iPad is no longer working.

"Reiss has been devastated without his iPad, so we are hoping to replace it as soon as possible.  We are also hoping to get an app which will help with his communication, and allow us to put timelines and schedules on it, which would help him to cope with daily life."

The other iPad is for 22 year old Karl who has charge syndrome, autistic tendencies, multi sensory impairment, complex learning difficulties and communication difficulties.

The group has been running a successful poster campaign too:

Check out the campaign Facebook page:

The group has also set up a Facebook event, another great way to get friends and family involved:

Raffle Prize for Phone Donors

Annette also runs a Facebook page to promote the handmade decorative plaques, canvas, photo frames that she makes that give a positive spin on raising autism awareness.  These items are used to help charities raise funds locally - and she will be holding a
raffle for anyone that donates a phone, and if anyone collects over 10 phones they will receive a free plaque....take a look at them here :)

Hearts and Minds celebrates 1000 Ausome Things #AutismPositivity2013

Hearts and Minds is a UK charity that aims to raise the quality of life for individuals and their families affected by autism, by ensuring the provision of the highest standards in education, care and support.  Set up in 2010, it is currently campaigning to raise £1 million, to fund an Autism Centre of Excellence in Manchester.  Funds are raised through sporting challenges, and through a recycling scheme that swaps old mobile phones for iPads and new technology.  Many of the families who have registered for this scheme have children with autism and are hoping that an iPad will help their development.

Many of them are also involved in the Hearts and Minds community Facebook page, and this is their contribution to the 2013 Autism Positivity project:
